Lesson 6: Doctrine and Covenants 7; 13; 18.
To start the lesson, help those you teach focus on the teachings of the chapter. Consider the following ideas: Read and discuss the section titled “From the Life of Joseph Fielding Smith” at the beginning of the chapter. Discuss a picture or scripture from the chapter. Sing a related hymn together.
The first lesson I taught was from the Joseph Fielding Smith Manual. Teachers who are called to teach in Relief Society or Priesthood at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints teach from a manual that is distributed by the church each year. Each Year the church distributes a manual that focuses on Teachings of Presidents of the Church.
Joseph Fielding Smith is the leading gospel scholar and the greatest doctrinal teacher of this generation. Few men in this dispensation have approached him in gospel knowledge or surpassed him in spiritual insight, His is the faith and the knowledge of his father, President Joseph F. Smith, and his grandfather, the Patriarch Hyrum Smith.

When we cover the sacrament in our lessons, the focus is usually on the doctrines behind the ordinance. In lesson 6 of the Teachings of Joseph Fielding Smith manual those doctrines are found in remembering the atonement and in the covenant made at baptism and renewed by the sacrament. However, I think there is a bit more to the role of the sacrament and sacrament meetings than these doctrines.
