Many universities offer joint degree programs, which allow students to obtain a J.D. and another graduate degree simultaneously. The concepts and skills taught in law school provide a solid basis for a legal career, but cannot encompass the entire body of knowledge necessary for work in a specific field.
Sociology students earn their MA on the way to the PhD. There is no terminal Master's degree program. It is possible to earn a joint Ph.D. in Sociology and another discipline by being admitted to and satisfying the requirements of two Ph.D. programs and writing a single dissertation.
Concurrent Degree Programs Students who wish to examine the law in an interdisciplinary context may arrange to pursue a J.D. degree at Berkeley Law School and a master’s degree in certain other schools or departments on the Berkeley campus.

Joint Degrees. The legal field’s interrelation with other academic disciplines has increasingly characterized legal scholarship and teaching in recent decades. Capitalizing on the University’s depth of resources, the College of Law collaborates with University graduate departments to offer multiple joint degree programs.
The mission of the PhD program is to train doctoral students to become effective scholars and practitioners in sociology by building: (a) a comprehensive understanding of sociological theory, statistics, methods and selected specialization areas; and (b) professional competency in sociological research, instruction, and engagement.
The University of Michigan Women’s Studies Department has three joint interdisciplinary PhD options. The joint degree is unique in that it combines grounding in one of three disciplines, training in feminist theories and methodologies, and interdisciplinary coursework in Women’s Studies.
