Charles Lamb, one of the most engaging personal essayists of all time, began publishing his unforgettable, entertaining Elia essays in the London Magazine in 1820; they were so immediately popular that a book-length collection was published in 1823. Inventing the persona of Elia allowed Lamb to be shockingly honest and to gain a playful distance for self-examination.

The ideas which John Zerzan explores in this series of essays are interesting and with a little work they could even be compelling. However, without applying analytic rigor to these ideas and making a coherent case for them to the reader, Zerzan appears to be preaching to the choir instead of making the case for the values and sense of the world he appears to take as self-evident.

Zerzan concludes the work by offering his observations on contemporary culture. Since Elements of Refusal was first published in the 80s Zerzan admits in the 'Preface to the Second Edition' that this section is the most dated. Nevertheless, there are valuable lessons to be learned by reading these essays.

Charles Lamb was an English essayist, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, which he produced with his sister, Mary Lamb. Lamb has been referred to by E.V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as the most lovable figure in English literature. Lamb was honoured by The Latymer School, a grammar school in Edmonton, a suburb of London.
